How Can Smart Homes help your sleep?

I am working on myself at the moment, one thing all of my family have struggles with is their sleep. I have been looking into this to try and ensure I can get the correct amount of sleep. My main resource has been Chris Williamson's 'Modern Wisdom', he has created some truly helpful podcasts with some of the leading experts in the sleep field.

The thing that has shown itself on multiple podcasts, has been that:

  1. Consistency is Key
  2. Light (especially Bluelight) plays a massive role
  3. Phones not to be placed in the Bedroom
Consistency is Key

The idea behind this is that you should be in bed trying to get to sleep with 10 minutes of a set time every single day. This is said much easier than it is, but a smart home can help you with this. Have you ever put off sleeping for one more episode? Have you ever stayed up all night watching Reels? Well using integrations and Automations, we can prevent the things that distract you from doing what they were designed to do. Don;t get me wrong, this is not going to be a simple fix as this takes will power, as you can always go and undo the actions needed to prevent this, but it easier to go to bed then go and carry out these actions.

Lighting

One thing that is known, is lighting plays a huge role in our Circadian rhythm. With the introduction of the modern lighting, we can now have the same amount of light as midday whenever we want. This disrupts our bodies natural rhythm and makes it harder for us to fall asleep. There are several ways we can help this, Blue Light blocking glasses etc, but a smart home could be your most simple way. If we have automations that means the lighting in your house follows the sunset, this will keep your circadian rhythm. As we do most likely want to be doing something for the last few hours of our day, we can ensure that all lights are set to a dull, warm light to prevent any bluelight disrupting our sleep.

Phones to be kept outside the bedroom

By using something like a smart assistant, we can create a routine that will ensure all the things needed for sleep can be activated. All lights turning off, thermostat set to cooling to name a few. This means our body does not have the temptation to look at your phone, meaning that you can focus on your sleep. The Smart speaker can also be set as an alarm, to ensure that you really do not need your phone in the bedroom.

These are just 3 ways that Smart homes can help ensure better sleep, but there are so many more. If you want to find out how we can help with this, email us at info@logicallysmart.co.uk
